Slovenia might be small but its packed with more than its fair share of drama and beauty. This trip explores the jagged peaks of the Julian Alps, stunning lake Bled and lonely isolated churches. For a total contrast we'll capture the pastel colours of Venetian Piran, one of the old empires best preserved coastal towns.
Highlights include Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj, Vintgar Gorge, Julian Alps vistas and the dramatic Vrsic Pass, the Soca River valley, Bovec and Kobarid, Kozak falls, Lake Fusine and Mt Mangarta plus many more.
Trip summaryThis is one of the best times to visit this beautiful and surprising little country. We'll meet up in Slovenia's pretty capital Ljubljana, from where we'll make the short drive north to the wonderful town of Bled.
From our base in Bled
Jaw droppingly beautiful Bled lies at the southern foot of the Karawanks Mountains. The small town wraps itself around the stunning lake with mountain peaks and plateaus providing the back drop. Bled has it all, a castle perched upon a cliff top, the lake complete with an island that appears to float, along with it's atmospheric Baroque church, just for good measure.
Your 4 nights here will give us plenty time to explore both Bled and photograph it's surroundings including beautiful Lake Bohinj, Vintgar gorge, Radovljica town and the nearby mountains and iconic churches such as Jamnik that dot the region. Staying close to the shore of the lake, you'll be guided to the best positions at both dawn and dusk, maximising your chances of capturing the subtle moods and colours of this wonderful location.
On one of your days you'll head west, winding your way up and over the stunning Vrisc Pass, the highest in the Julian Alps. The vistas here are stunning and will linger long in your memory while offering some amazing photo opportunities. From the high pass you'll then desending down into the beautiful Soca valley. Here we'll capture its aquamarine river that tumbles from the mountains. For your dusk session we'll turn around and travel backup the Vrsic pass to photograph the panoramic views high across the Julian Alps.
From our base in BovecLeaving Bled we'll again travel north west and cross briefly into Italy, checking out the conditions at Lago di Fusine for a potential dusk session, then travel up the mountain road ( subject to conditions ) to Mt Mangart, a breathtaking road with views to match. The following morning you'll photograph Slap Virje a nearby Bovec waterfall, before stopping at Kobarid and Kozjak falls, one Slovenia's, most photogenic waterfalls. From there its down to the Adriatic Coast and Piran.
From our base in Piran
After Bovec and the Soca valley we'll leave the Julian Alps and travel south to the medieval coastal town of Piran which will offer a complete contrast to the high mountains.
Piran sits on the northern shores of the Adriatic Sea and it's here that we'll have our final sessions. Your base for two nights is the classic Hotel Piran right by the water. The old town is perched on a spit of land and with its Venetian gothic architecture is one of the most well preserved on the entire Adriatic coast. Our first dusk session will feature a classic seascape including old town before we sample some of the best seafood on the Adriatic.
After an optional morning session over looking the town and short guided tour of some of the best spots to photograph, the day is yours to do as you wish, Go for a stroll , relax at the hotel or explore the town. Our last session before a final dinner will take place above the town form the old walls with great views over the old town and out over the Adriatic,
On your last day we'll return to Ljubljana via both the Skocjan caves ( optional ) and Predjama castle both worthwhile additions to what is an action packed photo adventure. Join me to capture the Autumn colours and breathtaking mountain and coastal scenery of Slovenia.Book your place online.
