Client Testimonial
From the outset the tour was more of a journey. To go to stunning locations and be given the freedom to explore and learn what you are capable of, safe in the knowledge that thoughtful guidance was there if needed, made the whole journey so incredible. Well researched and planned yet it felt so informal and comfortable. No down side only upsides to this workshop, all made possible by an extremely dedicated, easy to get along with professional. .” C. Location Cres: It’s Autumn down on the Adriatic coast and most of the tourists have gone but the clear cobalt blue sea is still warm enough for a swim at this time of year. The island of Cres’ hidden bays and rocky beaches litter the craggy coastline, viewed from high on a rocky hill they dare to be explored. You could easily lose yourself for an afternoon and well into the evening light, camera in hand waiting for that magic glow.
In the Tramuntana region of northern Cres, pronounced “sress”, hill top villages stand out like beacons with pastel red tiled roofs. The vistas out to dozens of neighbouring islands in the Kvaerner Gulf create stunning seascapes as ships and yachts sail through the channels like cloud streaks in a deep blue sky. Just like Scotland, Croatia has hundreds of islands scattered down it’s coast all with their own special appeal and magical light.
Cres town, our base for a few nights has a collection of crumpled pastel houses that surround the edge of the harbour, with a long history including Venetian and Italian rule. The towns, laneways, small fishing boats bobbing in the harbour and worn smooth walkways all create an air of timelessness and charm .
Location Plitvice:
Back on the mainland, the contrasting paths and rustic walkways of Plitvice meander and twist through blue/green pools with waterfalls and cascades appearing around every corner. The Unesco World Heritage Plitvice Lakes are a series of around 16 lakes, waterfalls and cascades that run for around 8kms between Mala Kapela Mountain and Pljesevica Mountain, around 3 hours south of Zagreb. You can wander for hours capturing flowing cascades and plunging waterfalls set in a lush environment of trees and soaring cliffs.
Location Motovun:
Perched on a 277m high hill the small medieval town of Motovun commands fantastic views of the valley below with the jumbled hillside villas also making wonderful photographic subjects. Located in the region of Istria, Motovun is famous for it’s truffles, hill top location and yearly film festival. Located a short 1 hour drive after coming off the ferry from Cres.
Three great but very different Croatian locations to explore, experience and photograph for yourself in Autumn 2012.

Zagreb airport is a 20 to 30 minute bus/ taxi ride to the centre of town. The Croation currency is the Kuna and is easily obtainable. Croatia is in my opinion more affordable than western european countires such as Italy and Greece and offers good vaue for money at most restaurants, cafes and bar. It won’t be long before Croatia becomes a full member of the EU so visit now and experience it as it used to be!

The Location: The Isle of Eigg, one of Scotland’s magical photographic locations. A landscape that photographers dream of photographing. Imagine a wide expansive beach littered with sculptured boulders, rock pools and ribbon patterns in the sand all taking centre stage while the dramatic outline of the Island of Rum with it’s twin peaks Askival and Ainshval provide the backdrop. A Great location to explore, photograph and experience.

The workshop
The Bay of Laig and Singing Sands will provide the main location with the Isle of Rum providing the backdrop. Walks on the southern side of the island with great views up to the Sgurr of Eigg will also feature. Sessions will include creative compositions, balancing exposure with ND filters, and sharing my digital darkroom techniques while refining our images with Adobe Photoshop back at the Croft. Image reviews and critiques will also play a part.
Photographing at sunrise and sunset or the magic hours will be our priority and there will be some time available to relax after breakfast prior to the afternoon and evening sessions.
Recommened equipment ; Neutral Density Gradiant filters, Neutral density 4 stop or 10 stop filters don’t worry if you don’t have them, although a Polarisor and Tripod will be required.
Fitness level
Moderate level of fitness, some coastal walking and occasional gradients on boggy / rocky terrain.
Group size – maximum 5 and subject to 2 participant minimum.
IMPORTANT – When and where: What makes Eigg such an attractive place to visit is that it is not easy to get to, so it’s never too busy. No cars are allowed on the Island (other than residents) and ferries are sporadic but usually on time. It is important that you get to Mallaig in plenty time to get the ferry in the morning. Details will be posted once the 2013 timetable is available. I will be driving down from Inverness on and can offer a lift to Mallaig if need be.
